This is a brisk read, a page turner, and gives us a clash of ideologies and intentions that are not black and white, and a deeply sensitive view of a young girl with an abusive parent, and the conflicts of love and hate that arise from a realistic depiction seldom found in the pages of fantasy, where such relationships are often idealized.

Every chapter leads us to uncover some fascinating new mystery about the world that the author has crafted—a world steeped in lore and magic, but home to some of the most fascinating flora and fauna I have ever encountered.

If you’re looking for something new, that stands out from your usual fantasy, with a unique magic system and a varied cast of characters, then I would highly recommend this debut novel.
